One of the elements of our move to Kansas from Arizona that has been the most difficult to us is finding a good place to go for a long walk with kids. Arizona, and Utah, and Colorado have all been places with excellent sidewalk networks. The sidewalks in the Midwest have been challenging at best, and nonexistent at worst. It has been hard to find a good route that has sidewalks consistently the entire way without too many street crossings. Many neighborhoods here don't have sidewalks, and if there are sidewalks they are likely only along one side of the street. Even then, the sidewalks frequently end in a patch of grass or underbrush without rhyme or reason. That said, we have found one place that is fantastic. The Threemile Creek trail in Leavenworth is awesome!
The path goes from the Missouri River at Leavenworth Landing Park, along Threemile Creek, to the southwest side of Downtown Leavenworth at Haymarket Square. It's about 1 1/4 miles one way, and is paved the whole way and since it is along the creek, there are no road crossings or traffic to worry about. It's a popular place to walk, and although it's never been crowded, we've never had the trail to ourselves either. It really is a great place to go. I've wondered a little more about trails in Leavenworth, so I dug up a copy of the Trails Masterplan to find out about other walking trails or bike paths in Leavenworth. Unfortunately, there aren't many right now. But don't hesitate to contact the city if you'd like to see faster progress on completing several additional trails or segments. The one that I think would be fantastic is the Railroad Trail from near the VA Campus on the south end of town up to downtown. You can see numerous segments of the old railroad grade throughout town that are now overgrown and crying out to become a trail system!
