Hiking up Baer Canyon

Saturday was a beautiful day, and we'd made arrangements earlier in the week to take advantage of it. We had a few friends over for breakfast at 8, then headed out hiking up Baer Canyon. The hike was quite pleasant. I thought Baer Canyon was more cool then Adams Canyon, and with fewer people tromping its trails.
A ways up the canyon, we departed from the trail to find our destination- an old mine. The mine was pretty cool- the tunnel was long, and it was free of graffiti and the other detrius that is so often found in old mines.
The walls had severa places where the mineralization was obviously present in shades of green with flecks of pyrite.
In addition to the minerals, there was a small gathering of crickets in a shallow indentation on one of the walls.
We took some photos and experimented with camera settings to get the best shot. We were having such a good time that we lost track of time and had to leave rather suddenly to make it back to town for other commitments. Rumor has it that there are other tunnels in the area, but we didn't have time to look for them. I'll be back...

  1. Hello Ben!
Inspired by your blog me and 3 of my brothers found this cave and went into it. Thanks for the tip, it was VERY cool! We were wondering if you knew anything more about it, how did you even find it originally? We also thank you for the GPS coordinates except to get there we climbed up a steep hill with loose gravel, and it didn't seem kid friendly, is there a better way to get up that was more kid friendly? Also, do you know if there were more mines pretty close to this one?

Thanks again for the fun activity! I love your blog!

  2. Laura,
Thanks for the comment. I don't know much about it, other than there are several mines in the Farmington area that are for copper and silver. I imagine this was one of those prospects. I have a friend from Kaysville that showed me where it was. I think the hike up from the bottom of the canyon is probably the best way to go. I think there are other tunnels close to this one, but I can't confirm if they are there since we ran out of time. Your best bet would be to start there, and look around. I think there's one a little higher, and another one higher and further west, but that's just a guess.

    1. Matt,
I've heard rumor of a third mine up Baer Canyon, but have not found it. Patsys Mine is pretty cool, but I somewhat like the one here in Baer Canyon because it hasn't been vandalized. An even better mine though is up the South Fork of the Weber River. I've heard it called the Rowe Mine and the Yellow Jacket or Hornet Mine. It's very cool!
