Fort Laramie

On the way home from our South Dakota trip, we stopped at Fort Laramie. It was time well spent. We arrived about half an hour before the visitor center closed, so we watched a short video then went and wandered the grounds of the old fort.

There are numerous old buildings still standing, along with the even more foundations. The fort covers a large area, but most of the buildings are all around the parade ground.
My favorite two buildings were the old officer's quarters and the barracks.

They said at the visitor center that Fathers Day weekend of every year is a mountain man rendezvous and celebration. If anyone's around then, stop in- you may be in for an extra special treat.

  1. Great Pictures! During the summer they do living history and on the Forth of July they have a large celebration, including old-fashioned games for both the kids and adults (potato sack races, three-legged races, greased pole climb... etc). In the past the "soldiers" in period dress, teach the visitors how to shoot the cannons. Sometimes the kid also get to participate in parade ground exercises. Truly a wonderful place!
