Fossil Butte National Monument

A few months ago we stopped by Florissant Fossil Beds in Colorado and were greatly underwhelmed by what I saw there. There were a dozen or so fossils, some pictures of fossils, and lots of signs about how they catalogue and file away the fossils that they do excavate. I wanted to see fossils! Having that background, I didn't expect much from Fossil Butte. I was wrong!

Fossil Butte is so much better. Fossil Butte is Amazing! They have amazing fossils on display- birds, turtles, fish, shrimp, crawdads, etc. Here are a few of my favorite. It's definitely worth your time to visit- even though it is an hour off of the interstate.

  1. Did you actually look at Florissant? Open the drawers in the exhibit cases? They have more fossils on display than Fossil Butte - they're just not as big. If you think that makes Florissant's fossils less significant, you're really ignorant.

  2. I agree. Florissant has one of the most diverse fossil assemblages in the world, and is a wealth of knowledge. They have dozens of fossils on display, and even more if you go to the fossil lab. You just have to take the time to look at them. Just because they aren't big, doesn't mean they aren't important.

  3. Great comments here. Just to set the record straight, I never said that the fossils at Florissant were less important or less significant than the ones at Fossil Butte. I just said that I like Fossil Butte better.
