Camping on Halloween? You betcha!

Ashley trying to decide what to do this weekend.

We decided to pack up and go camping yet again this year. With our apartment located in the back of a house, we decided that we wouldn't get any trick-or-treaters, and with our Halloween party last week, we decided to load up the car and go camping. I can hear you say- "What!- are you crazy? Camping this late in the year?" No, we're not crazy! Yes- we went camping!

One of our favorite canyons around here is Buckhorn Canyon. It's much less crowded than the popular Poudre Canyon (aka- "the trails are paved with people" canyon). Also, the drive northeast of Masonville is beautiful. The road winds up and down hills, along a stream, and between rock walls along the bottom of a canyon. We decided to try camping up there.
Along the way we stopped to look at the fish in the stream. When we came rockhounding up here 2 months ago we'd noticed a bunch of them. One of the fish swam into shallow water giving me the opportunity to catch it!

The little brookie.
Ten to twelve miles up the canyon we came to Box Prairie, a little cabin area. We found a campsite off the road a little ways and Ashley set up camp and I cooked dinner. What a great way to go- cooking is so much easier than setting up a tent!

We went on a little walk after dinner, but mostly sat around poking sticks in the fire, talking, and relaxing.

Speak softly, but carry a big burning stick.

Right before we went to bed, we played around with the night setting on the camera. Night time settings are awesome! This is probably our favorite shot.

YEAH! FEEL THE BURN! (notice the Nalgene bottles!)

So we retired to the tent for the evening. As we drifted off to sleep under our warm blankets, coyotes yipped and howled, serenading us to deep cuddly sleep. (Looking back on things, we didn't even see our breath at all this trip)

So we went hiking after breakfast in the morning. It was a sweet trail that almost started where our camp was. We didn't follow it the whole way (9 miles) to the end, just over the mudhole and through the woods. What a great way to spend the last day of October and the first day of November!

  3. I was impressed you let him put it up. I guess he just didn't ask.

Your trip sounds great. I don't think there is a better way to spend Halloween.
